September 28, 2016 Press Release

RALEIGH, N.C., Sept. 27, 2016 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — NC HIFU, a division of UroCare, PLLC, led by urologist Frank Tortora, MD elected to partner with HIFU Prostate Services, LLC (HPS), the leading provider of HIFU technology to physician’s practices in the United States. Dr. Tortora is one of the country’s leading HIFU physicians and has treated men offshore with HIFU for nearly 8 years prior to FDA-clearance of the Sonablate® HIFU technology.  Dr. Tortora has been treating men in the greater Raleigh area with Sonablate® HIFU since the beginning of this year.

HIFU, which stands for High Intensity Focused Ultrasound, is a non-surgical, radiation-free, outpatient procedure that uses focused sound waves to heat and destroy diseased tissue in the prostate gland. In October 2015, the FDA cleared the Sonablate® technology for the ablation of prostatic tissue. Sonablate® HIFU leads the industry in prostate tissue ablation with features such as Tissue Change Monitoring, Neurovascular Bundle Detection, Rectal Wall Monitoring, Reflectivity Index Monitoring, and MRI Fusion. No other HIFU device for prostate ablation offers all of these features to maintain patient safety and the highest level of quality care.

Dr. Tortora is a recognized expert in robotic surgery and HIFU technology for prostate cancer.  He is sought after by national developers of new urological procedures and treatments and has helped in developing medical and surgical techniques to aid in the treatment of male sexual dysfunction.  He has earned the title of experienced physician and proctor of Sonablate® HIFU by the device manufacturer, SonaCare Medical, LLC.  Dr. Tortora is affiliated with the UNC School of Medicine as a Clinical Associate Professor in the departments of Surgery and Family Practice.

“As the leader in providing the HIFU treatment to men in the Raleigh area, we are excited to be partnering with HPS,” said Dr. Tortora.  “This is a great opportunity for NC HIFU as well as for HPS, the country’s leading HIFU provider; and for the Raleigh community.”

“Out of the top ten HIFU physicians in the in the U.S., Dr. Tortora is the seventh to choose to partner with HPS. This means HPS has the largest pool of trained HIFU physicians and proctors in the country,” said John McLean chief operating officer with HIFU Prostate Services.

“We are excited that the greater Raleigh area is our tenth location to offer HIFU to patients with localized prostate cancer and our second location in the Carolinas in addition to Charlotte. HPS already leads the country in providing access to HIFU technology and training to physicians, and we are excited about adding NC HIFU and Dr. Tortora,” continued McLean.

High Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU), A Non-Invasive Technology Now Available in the Raleigh-Durham Area to treat Prostate Cancer

CARY, North Carolina, May 13, 2016 (NC HIFU) – High Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU), a non-invasive technology, has been FDA-approved for use in the United States as of October 2015. Before then, this technology has been used to treat prostate cancer in over 50,000 men outside of the United States. HIFU has the ability to treat their prostate cancer with a greatly reduced occurrence of side-effects such as erectile dysfunction and incontinence that often accompanies other treatments. Many American men were willing to travel off shore to receive this treatment. Now, men in the Raleigh-Durham area have access to be able to receive this alternative treatment option.

Dr. Frank Tortora, a board-certified Urologist at Associated Urologists of North Carolina, is one of only a few Urologists in North Carolina who are certified to perform HIFU treatment for prostate cancer. He has been in practice for over thirty years and has been performing HIFU procedures for ten years. Until Monday, March 28, 2016, Dr. Tortora and his patients traveled to Cancun, Mexico and the Bahamas for their HIFU treatment, because the procedure was not yet approved by the FDA for use in the United States. “I’ve been traveling out of the country for the last ten years to perform this procedure. I’ve done about 50 in that time, so, although HIFU is new to Raleigh-Durham and the United States, it’s not new to me, which is important for patients to know. I’ve been doing this for about as long as I’ve been doing robotic prostate surgery.

“It looks like this procedure will be quite in-demand, which is understandable, given the low risk of negative side effects.”

Candidates for HIFU are men with stage 1 or 2 prostate cancer that has not spread beyond the Prostate, Dr. Tortora said, which is the type of low grade cancer that is commonly treated by active surveillance, in which the patient’s PSA levels are checked regularly. Men in this condition may choose HIFU treatment because they do not want to put up with the uncertainty of their cancer progressing.

“I especially like HIFU because it leaves the door open for other procedures in the future, if the cancer returns. For example, radiation treatment – which carries a higher risk of impotence and erectile dysfunction – closes the door on surgery, should the radiation not be successful. This is because radiation mutates the DNA of tissue so that it does not heal well after surgery. This is not a problem with HIFU.”

June 21, 2016 BlogPress Release

There is good news for those who’ve received a prostate cancer diagnosis in the Raleigh Durham area. A new treatment has been approved in the last few months by the FDA that has people very hopeful for the future of treating this disease – the most diagnosed cancer in the United States. The treatment is non-invasive, low risk, and has virtually no recovery time or side effects. Sounds great, right?

Well, speaking of sounds, that is exactly how the process works. SonaCare Medical, based right here in North Carolina, developed a method for directing high intensity ultrasound waves directly at a particular area. This allows them to target specific points where cancerous cells are while sparing any nearby areas with healthy cells. They call this method High Intensity Focused Ultrasound, or HIFU.

HIFU has been used outside of the United States for years, and has successfully treated over 50,000 men with prostate cancer. The FDA has been taking a slow approach to approving this procedure out of its usual caution, but after years of digging into the benefits, they approved HIFU in October of 2015.

Dr. Frank Tortora of Associated Urologists of North Carolina, who operates here in the Triangle area, has over a decade of experience doing HIFU treatments for prostate cancer. He gained his experience by traveling outside the country with his patients to give HIFU treatments in Cancun, Mexico and the Bahamas.

Dr. Tortora’s office is located at Associated Urologists of North Carolina in Cary, but patients from Raleigh, Durham, Cary, Roxboro, Fayetteville, Hillsborough, Chapel Hill, Carrboro, Wilson, Goldsboro, and east of I-40 from Greenville to Wilmington travel to get this cutting-edge new treatment from one of the best in the world.

HIFU is a game-changer in the world of prostate cancer. No longer do men have to deal with a high risk of erectile dysfunction and losing bladder control in order to rid themselves of prostate cancer. HIFU targets the cancer carefully so it is very unlikely to damage healthy cells in the prostate or elsewhere in the urinary tract. This makes recovery times much quicker, pain usually non-existent, and the whole process much safer. Please contact Dr. Frank Tortora’s Cary, North Carolina office at the Associated Urologists of North Carolina to set-up a consultation by calling (877) 884-HIFU (4438).
